A joule is a unit of energy, and roasting is really just putting the right amount of heat into a bean over the right amount of time, so it felt like the right name for points you build up by ordering. The math is simple though, one Joule is one cent off any coffee.

How Joules accrue

Yield is calculated on subtotal, credited when the order ships, and multiplied by your phase.

How Joules are earned and spent Three inputs feed the Index: allocation bags at ten Joules per dollar, Argon Selection vials at twenty five Joules per dollar, and referrals at one thousand Joules each. The balance is multiplied by the member's phase and spends two ways: as credit worth up to ten percent of an order, or as earlier access to allocations. Argon vials earn 25 Joules per dollar instead of 10, because I make a little more on vials and it seemed fair to give more of that back.

100 Joules = $1. Joules apply to any order, on any lot, up to 10% of that order. There is no blackout week, no excluded roaster, and no expiry while your account stays active.

The four levels

Your level goes up with how much you've spent in total, and it never goes down. I named the levels after four stages of a roast, from Drying to Development.

PHASE 1

Drying

From first order

Up to about 320°F the bean dries out, and it doesn't taste like coffee yet.

From 320 to 385°F sugars and amino acids react and the bean browns, which is where most of the flavor gets built.

Terms of the Index

Joules carry no cash value and are not transferable. Redemption is capped at 10% of order subtotal. Joules credited on an order that is later refunded are reversed. Referral rewards post on fulfilment of the referred order and require a distinct customer account and shipping address. Entropica Coffee Co. may adjust yields with notice to members.
