Entropica Coffee Co. — Member Program

The Index

Every allocation you take is recorded. The Index converts that record into standing — measured in Joules, redeemable against any lot, and into earlier access to the coffees that sell out before the list is even notified.

Opening position

500 Joules

Credited the moment you open an account — $5 before you have spent anything.

Open an account and 500 Joules are credited immediately. You begin the program already holding value — not at zero.

Joule

/dʒuːl/ · the SI unit of energy

A joule measures energy transferred. Roasting is nothing but energy transferred: a bean becomes coffee only because a precise quantity of heat was applied to it over a precise interval. Too little and it stays grass. Too much and it is charcoal.

The Index measures the energy you put into the pipeline. Every allocation you take is heat applied. It accrues as Joules, it moves you along the curve, and like real heat it changes what you are: from someone who buys coffee into someone the roasters are held open for.

One Joule is worth one cent against any lot. That part is deliberately unglamorous. The unit is the metaphor; the value is just arithmetic.

How Joules accrue

Yield is calculated on subtotal, credited when the order ships, and multiplied by your phase.

How Joules are earned and spent Three inputs feed the Index: allocation bags at ten Joules per dollar, Argon Selection vials at twenty five Joules per dollar, and referrals at one thousand Joules each. The balance is multiplied by the member's phase and spends two ways: as credit worth up to ten percent of an order, or as earlier access to allocations. ALLOCATION BAG 10 J PER $1 ARGON SELECTION 25 J PER $1 REFERRAL CONVERTS 1,000 J EACH YOUR HOLDING Joules 1 J = $0.01 × your phase multiplier SPEND AS CREDIT Any lot, any roaster. Up to 10% of an order. SPEND AS ACCESS Earlier windows. Lots that sell out first.
A vial yields two and a half times what a bag does. That is not a promotion. The margin on the Argon Selection is genuinely higher, so the Index hands more of it back.

01

25J

Per $1 on Argon Selection

Two and a half times a bag. The margin on a vial is genuinely higher, so more of it comes back to you.

02

10J

Per $1 on an allocation

Ten Joules for every dollar of subtotal. A $60 allocation returns $6 of standing credit.

03

1,000J

A referral that converts

Posted when their first order ships. Uncapped — ten conversions is a $100 credit.

04

500J

Opening an account

Credited immediately, before you have spent anything further. You begin holding value, not at zero.

05

250J

A tasting note published

Write up a lot you have actually drunk. One note per lot, reviewed before it posts.

Each unbroken cycle

Take an allocation in consecutive weekly cycles and the streak pays a bonus on every one.

100 Joules = $1. Joules apply to any order, on any lot, up to 10% of that order. There is no blackout week, no excluded roaster, and no expiry while your account stays active.

The four phases

Named for the stages of the roast, because they are the stages of the roast. Phases are attained on lifetime allocation and never reset.

The four phases of a roast, mapped to the Index A rising roast temperature curve divided into four zones: Drying, Maillard, First Crack and Development. Each zone is labelled with its real roasting temperature range and the lifetime allocation threshold that attains it on the Index. LIFETIME ALLOCATION HEAT APPLIEDPHASE I Drying TO 320°F First orderPHASE II Maillard 320 – 385°F $400 lifetimePHASE III First Crack 385 – 401°F $1,200 lifetimePHASE IV Development 401°F + $3,000 lifetime
A roast is heat applied over time. The Index is the same curve, with your allocation in place of the heat.

A roaster does not apply heat evenly. The bean passes through four distinct regimes, and what happens inside it is different in each one. The Index borrows the names because the progression is the same: you begin by absorbing, you develop complexity, you reach the point where the reaction sustains itself, and then you get to decide the finish.

PHASE 1

Drying

From first order

To 320°F. The bean sheds ten to twelve percent of its weight as water and absorbs energy without giving any back. Nothing in it tastes like coffee yet.

  • 10 Joules per $1
  • 25 Joules per $1 on Argon
  • 500 Joules on entry
  • Allocation email before public release

PHASE 2

Maillard

$400 lifetime

320 to 385°F. Sugars and amino acids react and the bean browns. This is where several hundred aromatic compounds are built. Complexity is made here or it is not made at all.

  • 12.5 Joules per $1
  • 31 Joules per $1 on Argon
  • Complimentary shipping from $60
  • First look at Argon Selection lots

PHASE 3

First Crack

$1,200 lifetime

385 to 401°F. Internal pressure ruptures the cell walls with an audible crack. The reaction turns exothermic: the bean stops only taking heat and starts releasing its own.

  • 15 Joules per $1
  • 37 Joules per $1 on Argon
  • Complimentary shipping, no minimum
  • 24-hour early access to every allocation
  • Annual roaster-direct sample

PHASE 4

Development

$3,000 lifetime

Past first crack. The shortest phase and the most consequential. Everything still undecided about the cup, acidity against body, is settled in these final seconds by the person at the drum.

  • 15 Joules per $1
  • 37 Joules per $1 on Argon
  • Guaranteed allocation on rare lots
  • First refusal before the list is notified
  • Direct access to the curator

The Ledger overrides the curve

A roaster watches rate of rise as closely as temperature. Heat applied steadily builds a different bean than heat applied in bursts. A subscription is a controlled rate of rise, and the Index treats it that way.

TIER ONE

The Dossier

Holds Phase II — Maillard

  • 12.5 Joules per $1, permanently
  • 31 Joules per $1 on Argon
  • One bag, curated monthly
  • Printed Curator's Note
  • Complimentary shipping from $60
  • Notified ahead of any non-Ledger member at the same phase

TIER TWO

The Archive

Holds Phase III — First Crack

  • 15 Joules per $1, permanently
  • 37 Joules per $1 on Argon
  • Two bags, curated monthly
  • Printed Curator's Note
  • 24-hour early access to every allocation
  • Complimentary shipping, no minimum
  • Joules never lapse, even dormant

A Ledger phase is held, not earned. It does not decay, it does not wait on your spend to catch up, and it cannot fall while the subscription stands. Where two members sit at the same phase, the Ledger member is notified first. That tiebreak is permanent.

This is the single fastest route onto the curve. Someone subscribing to The Archive today outranks a customer who has spent a thousand dollars in single allocations.

Terms of the Index

Joules carry no cash value and are not transferable. Redemption is capped at 10% of order subtotal. Joules credited on an order that is later refunded are reversed. Referral rewards post on fulfilment of the referred order and require a distinct customer account and shipping address. Entropica Coffee Co. may adjust yields with notice to members.
